Short abstract from the book: The black tern is a rare breeding bird in Denmark, with an
estimated population of less than 100 breeding pairs. It is also
a rare passage migrant.
In Denmark the first black tern was ringed in 1919, with
most ringed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Nine birds
have been recovered, all ringed as chicks.
The recoveries give very little information on the migration of the Danish black tern, since only one has been recovered from abroad. This bird was recovered on 18 August in
IJsselmeer. Danish birds have been recovered at the ringing
site 5, 8 and 21 years after ringing. A two-year-old bird was
recovered in northern Italy in June, indicating that some birds
spend their summer south of the breeding site until maturity.
A juvenile bird ringed in Latvia was recovered in Denmark
in August.
