Black Woodpecker

Dryocopus martius

Sortspætte

Short abstract from the book:
The black woodpecker is a rather rare breeding bird in Denmark with an estimated population of 200–300 pairs. The first black woodpecker was ringed in Denmark in 1967, with the majority ringed in the first half of the 1980s. Black woodpeckers are residents: only 38 of 114 recovered birds moved more than 10 km between ringing and recovery, 25 moved more than 20 km and three more than 50 km. The only long-distance movement was a bird ringed in northern Zealand in March and recovered in Norway four years later (409 km). Recoveries show that the population in Schleswig-Holstein and southern Jutland should be considered as one, exchanging individuals in both directions. Five birds from southern Jutland and 13 ringed in northern Germany have been recovered further north in Jutland. Three of the German birds were recorded as breeders in central Jutland. Three birds ringed in southern Sweden have been recovered on Zealand.
