Bohemian Waxwing

Bombycilla garrulus

Silkehale

Silkehale

Short abstract from the book:
The waxwing is a common, and in some years irruptive, winter visitor. In Denmark the first waxwing was ringed in 1947, with the largest numbers ringed in 1970 (200) and 1996 (438). The recovered waxwings were ringed from late October to March, mainly in eastern Denmark. Fifty-four waxwings ringed abroad have been recovered in Denmark. Only one of the birds ringed in Denmark was recovered in the breeding area (during winter) in northern Sweden. Seven birds ringed in Finland in the migration season have been recovered in Denmark, giving a clue to the origin of the winter visitors. Waxwings ringed at migration hotspots along the Baltic Sea and in southern Norway have been recovered in Denmark. The recoveries show that many waxwings stay in Denmark throughout the winter. However, a few have been recovered in Italy and southern England later in the same winter. Waxwings visiting Denmark have in other winter periods been found in Norway, Sweden, Scotland, northern Germany and Hungary. Birds ringed on Heligoland and in Scotland have been recovered in Denmark during spring. Most birds depart from Denmark in March.
