Short abstract from the book: The garganey breeds in only quite small numbers in Denmark
and is also a rather rare passage migrant. The first garganey
was ringed in 1928, with most ringed in the 1960s, mainly
in duck decoys. Both birds of the Danish breeding population
and passage migrants have been ringed and recovered. From
Denmark some garganeys migrate SW along the Atlantic coast
and some due S through central Europe, on their way to wintering sites in tropical Africa. However, no garganeys ringed in
Denmark have been recovered from the winter quarters. The
same alternative routes are used during spring. During spring,
male garganeys have been recovered in Greece, Romania,
Poland, Russia and Kazakhstan – probably on their way to
a new breeding site with a female they met during winter. A
large proportion of the recovered birds have been shot.
