Short abstract from the book: he scaup has only bred in Denmark on very rare occasions; however, Danish waters used to be a very important
wintering site for the species. In the 1970s up to 100,000
were counted in inner Danish waters and in the Limfjord.
However, since the 1980s the winter population numbers only
10,000–40,000. The first scaup was ringed in Denmark in
1940, with the majority ringed in the first half of the 1960s,
mainly in the duck decoy in Nakskov Fjord. The recovered
birds were all ringed from October–May. The recoveries show
that the winter visitors came from Sweden, Finland and
northern Russia. A single scaup from Iceland was recove red in
Denmark. Some of the scaups ringed in Denmark were later
recovered on the German or Polish north coasts. The majority
of the scaups were recovered as shot (67 %) or drowned in
fishing nets (19 %).
