Meadow Pipit

Anthus pratensis

Engpiber

Engpiber

Short abstract from the book:
The meadow pipit breeds in open country over much of the country, in highest densities in western Jutland. It is a common passage migrant in September–October and April–May. The first meadow pipit was ringed in Denmark in 1921, with the number of ringings increasing until the 1980s. Ninety-three per cent of the recovered birds were ringed in April–October, probably including both Danish breeding birds and passage migrants. From Denmark the meadow pipits migrate SW. The first ringed bird was recovered south of Denmark, in Belgium, in late September. The birds seem to pass Belgium in September–October. The first bird was recovered in the Bay of Biscay in early October and by the end of the month one was recovered in southern Portugal. In winter the birds are recovered on Christiansø, in the Netherlands, France, Spain and Morocco. In spring 15 birds have been recorded at the ringing sites, mainly in April. The recoveries in Denmark give only very limited information about the origin of the passage migrants: a bird was ringed as a chick north of the Kola Peninsula and a potential breeding bird was ringed in August in northern Sweden.
