Short abstract from the book: The red-breasted merganser is common breeder in Denmark,
mainly breeding in coastal sites. Many previously moulted
in Limfjord, but this site seems to have lost its importance. A
large proportion of red-breasted mergansers remain in Danish
waters during winter.
The first red-breasted merganser was ringed in 1898, with
most ringed in 1934–37. The majority of the recovered birds
were ringed either as chicks or as adults in the breeding season.
The recoveries indicate that most of the Danish red-breasted
mergansers remain in Danish waters throughout the year. A
few have been recovered at the IJsselmeer and one in southern England. Outside the breeding season, from October to
February, visitors from Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia
and Russia have been found in Denmark. A large proportion
of the birds were hunted and 9 % of the dead birds were caught in fishing nets.
