Short abstract from the book: The redwing is an irregular and rare breeding bird in
Denmark, but a common passage migrant and a rather common winter visitor. The first redwing was ringed in Denmark
in 1927, with most ringed between 1960 and 2001. The
recovered birds were ringed in different parts of the country, many at migration hotspots, and mainly in November
and April. The numbers of passage migrants build up in
October and culminate in November. The migrants come
from Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Baltic Countries.
From Denmark many birds migrate SW to be recovered in
England, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and Spain. Birds
recovered in Italy were all ringed at Christiansø. During
winter most birds have been recovered in southern France,
Portugal and northern Italy. Twelve per cent of the winter
recoveries are from Denmark. Some birds are recovered in
southern Europe in March but the mean position indicates
that the return migration has started. Most redwings pass
Denmark in April.
The main cause of death is shooting/hunting. Eighty-five
per cent of the 95 birds recovered in France, Spain, Portugal
and Italy were reported as shot. The main cause of death
is shooting/hunting. Most have been shot in France (45 %),
Spain (31 %) and Portugal (14 %).
