Rough-legged Buzzard

Buteo lagopus

Short abstract from the book:
The rough-legged buzzard is a common passage migrant and winter visitor in Denmark from October to April. In Denmark the first rough-legged buzzard was ringed in 1953, with most ringed from 1960 to the mid-1980s. The majority of the recovered birds were ringed in traps from December to March. Only one of the recovered birds was ringed in Jutland. Recoveries of rough-legged buzzards ringed or recovered in Denmark show that the winter visitors come from Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. Many of the birds return to the same wintering site year after year: all nine birds that were ringed and recovered in Denmark in subsequent winters were found less than 10 km from the ringing site. However, two birds ringed in Denmark during winter were recovered in the Czech Republic the following winter. Most rough-legged buzzards depart from Denmark in April, but five one-year-old birds have been found in Denmark in May–July.
